What are Significant Figures?
Significant figures show the precision of a measurement. Use the tool above to see which digits count and why. Below are a few rules:
- Leading zeros (e.g. 0.0025) do not count.
- Trailing zeros are counted if there is a decimal point (e.g. 2.300 has 4 sig figs).
- For integers without a decimal point, trailing zeros are ambiguous unless specified.
- Scientific notation (1.230e3) clearly shows sig figs: mantissa determines the count.
Examples:
0.00450 → 3 sig figs
1200 → ambiguous (often treated as 2 significant figures unless a decimal is shown)
3.450e2 → 4 sig figs
