How to Deploy Your Skill to Claude
Architect your skill in the free tool
Pick an industry preset (or go custom), fill in your goal, tone, required inputs, and — importantly — your trigger phrases. Hit Generate, or flip on AI Mode for a Gemini-written version.
Save it as SKILL.md inside its own folder
Click "Download File" (or copy the text) and save it as SKILL.md inside a folder named after your skill — e.g. my-skill/SKILL.md. This matters: Claude's uploader expects the folder itself, not a loose file.
Zip the folder
Right-click the folder → Compress/Zip. The resulting .zip should contain your folder at its root, with SKILL.md inside it.
Turn on Code Execution, then upload
In Claude.ai: Settings → Capabilities, enable "Code execution and file creation" if it isn't already (this works on Free, Pro, and Max — Team has it on by default). Then go to Settings → Customize → Skills → Upload and select your zip.
Test it with a real trigger phrase
Start a new chat and type one of the phrases you listed as a trigger. If Claude doesn't pick it up, that almost always means the description field needs to be more specific — go back and tighten it in the generator.

What is a Claude Skill and how is a SKILL.md file structured?
A Claude Skill is a small, reusable instruction package — one folder containing a required SKILL.md file and, optionally, supporting scripts or reference files. The file itself has two parts: a YAML frontmatter block between --- markers at the top (Claude only strictly needs name and description here), followed by a plain markdown body with the actual instructions, tone rules, and step-by-step logic Claude follows once the skill loads. The frontmatter is tiny and stays loaded at all times; the body only loads into context when the skill actually fires, which is why keeping the body focused (roughly under 500 lines) protects your context window.
Do I need a paid Claude plan to create and use custom Skills?
No — Skills work on the Free plan too. What you actually need is the "Code execution and file creation" toggle turned on under Settings → Capabilities, which is available on Free, Pro, and Max. Team plans have it enabled by default at the organization level, and Team/Enterprise add extra controls like org-wide skill distribution and per-member toggles. So if you've heard Skills are Pro-only, that's outdated — the toggle is the actual requirement, not your subscription tier.
How does Claude know when to automatically use my custom skill?
Entirely through the description field in the frontmatter. Claude compares what you're asking for against every enabled skill's description and loads the one that matches — a vague description ("helps with writing") rarely fires, while a specific one that states both what the skill does and when to use it ("Use this when the user asks to write a property listing, MLS description, or Zillow blurb...") triggers reliably. How do I actually upload a Skill to Claude.ai?
Save your SKILL.md inside a folder named after the skill, zip that folder (so the zip contains the folder at its root — not a loose SKILL.md file), then go to your profile icon → Settings → Customize → Skills → Upload and select the zip. This folder-inside-the-zip detail trips up a lot of first-timers, so it's worth double-checking before you upload.
What's the difference between a Skill and a Claude Project or Custom Instructions?
Custom Instructions and Projects are always-on context for a specific workspace — Claude sees them in every message within that project, whether they're relevant or not. Skills are the opposite: they're auto-discovered and stay dormant until the description matches your request, then load in, run, and get out of the way. That makes Skills the better fit for a library of reusable, task-specific workflows you want available everywhere, without cluttering every conversation with instructions that only apply some of the time.
Can I test my skill before uploading it to Claude?
Yes.
